Women of Color at Penn Awards

The National Institute for Women of Color (NIWC) has proclaimed March 1st National Women of Color Day. Penn, UPHS, Presbyterian and Pennsylvania Hospital seek to increase our awareness of the talents and achievements of women of color by recognizing those who support women of color, regardless of their sex, gender, race, or other status with the Women of Color Award.
The Women of Color Awards are given in recognition of individuals who have conscientiously endeavored to increase respect for women of color at Penn, University of Pennsylvania Health Systems, Presbyterian, Pennsylvania Hospitals and the Delaware Valley community.
Criteria for Awards
Annually, awards are given in up to six categories: Helen O. Dickens, Joann Mitchell Outstanding Legacy, faculty/staff, graduate and/or professional student, undergraduate student, and community member. The award criteria is outlined below.

Nominees for the Helen O. Dickens Award must be affiliated with University of Pennsylvania Health Systems, Presbyterian or Pennsylvania Hospital, other Penn affiliates, and have demonstrated over 25 years of previously recognized service and demonstrate:
- Outstanding leadership
- Distinguished service
- Positive impact on the community
- Commitment to enhancing the quality of life for and/or serving as a role model for women of color
Nominees for the Joann Mitchell Outstanding Legacy Award must be affiliated with University of Pennsylvania Health Systems, Presbyterian or Pennsylvania Hospital, and University of Pennsylvania affiliates, the Philadelphia area, have provided exceptional and/or long term service to the Women of Color Organization and have demonstrated:
- Attendance in Women of Color Executive Planning meetings
- Held leadership roles in the various committees
- Created an innovative enhancement to the WOCAP initiative
- Worked to ensure the existence of the organization for posterity (Does not preclude receipt of other WOCAP awards)
Nominees for faculty/staff, graduate and/or professional student, undergraduate student, and community member awards must be affiliated with University of Pennsylvania Health Systems, Presbyterian or Pennsylvania Hospital, or the local Philadelphia area and must have demonstrated:
- Exceptional leadership
- Distinguished service
- Positive impact on the community
- Commitment to enhancing quality of life for and/or serving as a role model for women of color

The 2024 Women of Color Awards were presented to individuals in the following areas:
- Faculty or Staff: Eugenia South
- Graduate and/or professional student: Kyndall Nicholas
- Undergraduate student: Sade Taiwo
- Community member: Janice Sykes-Ross
